Had a leaking union on the central heating last night which I couldnt get at with my Stillsons so nipped down to the local screwfix and got a pair of these http://www.screwfix.com/p/irwin-vice-grip-12-groove-joint-pliers/43518 for 9 squids I was well impressed.

OK untill the groovs wear and then they can jump a groove and trap your fingers. If you use them a lot then Knopex ones with a push button adjust are better... but dearer.

I have a large pair , can't remember the make but they are one of the best oil filter removing tools I have used. Pretty good for pushing back brake caliper pistons as well.

I have knippex push button pliers, which are excellent. Found an 8" (approx) pair in the road too one day, right result. A friend who has connections at Irwin gave me a set of their push-button waterpump pliers in the old colours. Excellent they are too, but just a bit wider than my knippex ones (and the extra width can be a pain with plumbing)

Looking at the construction cant see them slipping and the knippex ones are £60 which defeats the object of this post anyroad.

I bought a set of big Blue Point pump pliers off the Snap-on van during my apprenticeship in 1989. They have to be the most used tool in my collection. As said, great for oil filters and brake calipers, as well as bending, squishing, pulling, holding whilst welding etc.
