also, i can't say i'm keen on ball bearings being between me and the forces for turning the wheel unless i've missunderstood.

personally i'd prefer a nice splined job!

I think it's a copy of one of the really nice expensive ones that relies on bearings to lock the male part in place. Once the bearing ring covers the bearings, the bearings aint going anywhere!
The expensive ones were discudded on a thread in the Middy section a while ago.

perhaps i'm just agricultural but i prefer the idea of a nice fitting spline - lots of area to spread that load around.

I got one of these from the Autosport show for ~£30, I think from Randall motorsport



Its just as well made as the Racetech / Sparco ones etc, the only thing it doesnt have is a blind spline meaning you can put the wheel on in any position, but its easy enough to make a mark or just always park pointing straight ahead. Over the winter I might mod it to make a blind spline on it by getting one spline TIG welded up, and getting the dremel out to make a corresponding match on the female part.

Did you have to drill the randall one your self for the steering wheel bolts? And how did you fit it to your existing column?

No you dont need to drill it, it has 3 pre tapped holes for bolts to hold the wheel (the pic above shows the rear face that you pull to disengage).

I just junked the Sierra column and had my uncle make me up a custom column with it welded on the end.

You might be able to weld it to a donor column, but you really need a nice straight circular colunm that you can machine to mate with the splined boss before welding, something that might be tricky with the odd shaped inner of a Sierra for example.
