I heard that at one time many Soviet cars were made with "compressed cardboard" bodies, but I don't know about the Trabant or if they maybe changed that on later models.

I've been a passenger in on of these on many drunken occasions in Bulgaria, Romania & the Ukraine - I'd love one.

They have one thing in common with my Indy, no petrol gauge! Weight saving or capitalist luxury.

I used to travel about in East Germany and Poland and used to see them pulled over to the side of the road. Driver would lift the bonnet and open the tank and have a good look into the filler to see if they needed to fill up.

I think that black thing, just above the spark plugs is the petrol tank. Nice and safe.



IIRC the bodies are are like hardboard with a gel coat on top.
