Metal Lathe
Johnmor - 2/12/06 at 10:11 AM

I have been looking for a lathe for some time , and i have looked at several 2nd hand machines, but they were well worn and often imperial, so was not keen.

Spotted this, and being a tradesman i have bought a few machines from Axminster in the past and their descriptions are pretty fair and acurate.

As i live in the North East Scotland quality 2nd hand machines are always 200 miles away

Thoughts form the more expierenced out there please

Also the one you wanted is out of stock!

Hi, I run a school workshop with 4 lathes of varying sizes and buy eqiuipment from lots of suppliers
we bought a vertical milling machine from Axminster a couple of years ago and have been very happy with it - well made solid and bomb proof, well guarded and they deliver - truck seems to lap the country every couple of weeks.
If you phone upand ask they occasionally find discontinued models in the warehouse which are similar spec to current range but a bit cheaper- worth a phone call. We almost went back to them to buy a thicknesser but it was out of stock so we bought a dewalt locally

Kev has one of those middle priced ones and the motor packed up but they fetched it back and replaced it for him. It was the starter on the electric motor and it has been o.k. since then (2 years now).

Indeed it is, but Machine Mart's equivalent tiddler is twice the price...

Ive seen them at exhibitions and they look to be good value for the price, that one looks to be a handy size and reasonably strong. The inverter drive may be a bit underpowered on low speeds if theres no back gear, but apart from that it would be a usefull machine for home use.

We acquired a couple of the cllarke little jobs for training little kids (who can't reacht he proper machines - not child labour yet!,) ok for nylon and brass but complete carp for anything else and the little fuse keeps blowing even though we upgrade dit slightly
