NSX engine on fleabay..

Maybe interesting for the middy builders?

It's from a 1991 Honda NSX. 3 liter VTEC engine, should be around 270Hp.. Should make a sweet sound when revved hard!

Some of the pictured don't work here though, but it seems there is no transmission to go with that lovely engine. Bummer.

Buy it now price is only £1,200.00 though!

Did they use that engine anywhere else? IE, somewhere that may give up a gearbox?

I'm pretty sure this engine was developed specifically for the NSX... though if they're breaking an accident damaged car, they should have the transmission, right? Perhaps they're just looking to make a little extra £££?

I just did a quick check.. the engine code for this engine is C30A. It does appear like it's only been used in the NSX up to 1997.

In 1997, the NSX got the 3.2l engine, which has 20Hp more.. engine code = C32B.

I'm not sure how much these engies are related though..

Interestingly, there is another 3.2L variant; the C32A, which is a SOHC design, and sports only 200 to 230 Hp depending on its application. This engine was offered in the US specs of the Honda/Acura Legend.

I guess the transmission of the Legend would fit the later model NSX engine. I am not sure though if the blocks of the C30A and C32B are the same..

Let's see... the C20 engines were used in the following cars;
'85 - '89 Honda Legend

The C25 engines;
'86-'87 Honda Legend
'83-'85 Rover 825 Sedan

For the C27 engines;
1987 Acura Legend Coupe
1988-1990 Acura Legend
1995-1997 Honda Accord
1985-1996 Rover 827

So there ya have it... if correct, the Rover 827 V6 model should give you a fitting transmission. No idea how it would stand up to the abuse though.

According to the ad it's the C32B, but as you say, the Rover/Honda stuff may not be up to it! BUt if they're not too expensive, you could always figure out a quick change system!

afaik it has to be the C30 (3.0L), the C32 is a 3.2L engine, aand wasn't introduced until 1997.. since he says the engine comes from a 1991 NSX... Unless I read over it, it doesn;t say in the ad it's a C32. In which case I guess it's safe to assume it's a C30 engine..

No, you're right, it's the C30. I was getting confused with another web page I was looking at! Is the engine tunable at all, or is it more like the S2000 lump where a charger is the only sensible way forward?

Are you kidding? There are 500+ Hp race-tuned engines out there. And that's without turbo. Costs a fortune though.. the NSX never was a cheap car, so that makes parts expensive, too, even though the engine is basically the same as the other versions.. I have seen twin-turbo versions putting out more than 800 Hp.

But uhhm.. yeah.. Adapting a Rover 827 transmission to fit will probably not hold up to that much power..

120 Hp extra at only 7psi boost..
Lower the CR a little and up the boost to get some serious power.. not cheap though..

One of my work colleagues has a 3ltr nsx. There is little to be done nat asp on a standard car without spending huge amounts of money. Custom exhaust headers and de-cat is about all he's done engine wise, apparantly the ecu map from honda is pretty much spot on so chipping is of no/ very little benefit.

For big power he tells me forced induction is the way to go but certainly not cheap...

Another friend is running a k20a (civic type-r engine) in an elise with a supercharger pushing out 300bhp so if the gearbox matches/fits should take the power for a transverse install...

If sourcing an nsx box the 5 speed is meant to be slightly stronger than the 6 speed, but the 6 speed has better ratio's

Seems like we may have the same problem.. that sounds like the kind of stuff I might be looking at on a rainy afternoon..

It's a good thing I'm dirt poor, otherwise I'd end up buying the strangest things..
