I saw an ex press car for 42K in a classic mag last month as well.

Its a MK1 escort not a rare racer!!!!

well. its a stunning car and really does look the mutts nuts, but at £20,000 STARTING bid, hes clearly bonkers...

there seems to be alot of people that think an old escort os worth silly money, one i spotted last week i put on here, total madness, crazy ford drivers yes, but this is a new breed haha.....

madness...........

That really is just too much money - I do love the look though, MK1 and bubbles - Hmmm!

DarrenW - 12/12/07 at 08:02 PM

Is it really that overpriced? Its not unusual to see full cars in MSN for 25K+. Id be surprised if one of those specialised shell prep companies would build you one for less. If it is genuinely correctly rally prepped then, fair do's its not cheap, but maybe not that far OTT.

I agree it particularly well prepared, but without the engine and gearbox!!! thats the bit that tip it over the edge

I do think that there is a preceived rarity with the MK1 Escort. But go to any Hillclimb sprint, Rally or trials and there are loads

look....

...they are hiding in the woods.

(PS I now there are 2 beetles as well )

Confused but excited. - 12/12/07 at 10:41 PM

Steel bubble arches!
I'd expect proper scabby fibreglass racing ones for that price.

Wouldn't mind the 5.1 axle though.

Just don't tell the guy it's for a locost car or he'll double it.

ebay is a good measuring stick unless those crazy nigerians start bidding!

my prediction: nul points.

Blakey_boy - 13/12/07 at 08:55 AM

It would cost the same amount to source and get a lump (Cossie). Sums as Follows

Block 3700 (Alloy)
Head 930 (Carbs)
Crank 1500
Rods 175 each = 700
Pistons 580 per set rings extra

Thats nearly 7500 without all the trimmings Gaskets bolts bearings etc etc and any enginnering required to bring it up to spec if aspirated or turbo

Turbo up to 2000 each

According to a pal works around 18000

You probably wouldn't fancy a proper freshly prepared GRP4 MK2 complete for 60K-80K then.

The ones that both Richard burns and Colin Mcrae had built cost 80 ish K. And there are people who do these builds on a regular basis.

But the crazy or not so crazy thing is they then go and drive them flat out through a Forrest stage . But that's what they are built to do.

Here's Colin Mcrae in action in his MK2 escort.
