It works on pressure.
You place it just under each wheel rim (at the top) and apply leverage until the car just lifts off the floor and take a reading.
Do it on all 4 wheels and compare readings.

There was a discussion on this maybe 18 months ago. I seem to recal a link to a site with diy plans but cant remember where. Worth a search or get snuggs to draw up mookys!!

I think the Race & Rally car source book by Alan Staniforth has a build plan using an old clutch slave cyl.
