Repair Trolley Jack
ko_racer - 2/6/09 at 09:21 AM

Does anyone know much about trolley jacks?

I've got a nice low entry aluminium one, which has worked well.
Recently it has started to lower itself, it will lift fine but as soon as you let go of the handle, the handle goes slowly up and the jack goes down.

Not having had one apart before I though I see if anyone's got any idea what may be wrong before I strip id down.

Is there some kind of non-return valve that could cause this?

Sounds like the valve is leaking, inside the hydraulic ram. See if you can get a new one. I wouldnt take it apart, as generally theyre non serviceable items.

My trolly jack came with a small bag with an O ring seal IIRC.
Have you still got the instructions (or are they on the internet), they often come with an exploded diagram of the workings.

i got some o rings as well, when i got mine new.

maybe try and find the online supplier to see if you can buy bits.

They generally are rebuildable.
Little tip, replace ALL seals and clean everything. It can be very hard to spot the problem.
You should be able to visit a seal store with the old bits in hand and walk out with new ones.
Cheers,
Cory

Yes - its usually just o-rings.

I got a kit of about 500 o-rings from Stoneleigh for <£10.

Not had my jack play up yet but have fixed air line PCL couplings with it etc.
