giving gelcoat a new life?
FastBarney - 4/11/08 at 09:52 PM

hey

my "new" kitcar's gelcoat needs to be cleaned
The car has spent most of its life stored outside. And the owner sad that the gelcoat would benefit from a good t-cut and polish.
Now i don't have a idea how to begin with that
So can somebody tell me what do i need an how i need to do this?
Thanks

Give it a good wash to remove any dirt and then give it a good buff up with decent polish like Auto Glymm before resorting to T-Cut. You may find that a really good clean and polish brings it nicely back to life.

If it needs more then wash again and polish over with T-Cut.

yer i would use some compound eg ferecla G3 but original t-cut will be fine used by hand then a good wax with some auto gleam it will be hard work but very rewarding in the end .
mine is only 4 months old and had been sat in corner of workshop with welding going on and spraying and some times it was not covered up i happened to rub the compouned over bonet (3M fastcut) and it showed it up something wroten i had to spend rest of the evening polishing it back white dosent look dirty till its cleaned lol

If it's an even colour, just G-3 / Mer it....you'll be astounded at the results.

My Fury is 12 years old and could be brought up to a magnificent shine. Made the mistake of sanding part of the body. Now have to spray it to fix that fact that some parts of the body are different colours (oxidation) .. oh and also because I'm grafting a daft bulge onto it...

Ive found G3 can leave a dull ish finish but going over afterwards with G10 will restore the gloss. G10 is obviously very fine but might be OK for a finish that just needs light cutting. Use decent polish afterwards.

Mer, Glym both have silicones and silicates in them. Avoid like the plague.

Buff with G3 and then a few coats of a genuine hard wax polish.

Cheers,
Syd.

Does it really work going from G3 straight to the polish. Ive always had to follow G3 with finer grade. Have i been doing something wrong?

Can you still get hard wax polish? Guess its not favoured cos its harder to apply etc. When im feeling flush i use my Zymol, however ive got one of the cheaper bottles of zymol too. Do they have the silicates etc in them?

You can use G3 and G10 by hand no probs, it just takes a lot longer. Machine is quicker but takes a little skill. I sometimes use a polisher from cigarette lighter for quick polish ups.
