I’m looking for a modern dash mounted ignition barrel/key that doesn’t look like something out of the 1960s, there are loads out there but I’m trying to modernise my dash layout and would like something with a cleaner look. Has anyone any suggestions or ideas or pictures? It’s to replace the sierra one on the steering column.
Hi, I can't sadly suggest anything as I've not seen a car like that, but I'd have thought that any keys on the key ring would scratch
the dash eventually ?
So you'd have to mount the barrel as low as possible on the dash.

Really good call on the key scratching thing - glad you mentioned that I'll make sure it's low down. I'm not a fan of the push button
start thing myself.
Has anyone mounted the ignition barrel up under the dash hidden out of the way?
What about a motorbike ignition switch? They have at least 2 attach points design to fit under the fork upper tee, so you could attach it to your
chassis, via a bracket, and not directly to your dash (harder to remove for a thief), but still have the key hole accessible on your dash. They are
very solid, and I'm sure latest ones look modern enough for your project.
Hope that will help
In the pic below, just behind the steering wheel is my choke lever, and on the other side of the wheel was the ignition barrel
later around 15 years ago, I swapped them over so the ignition was over my left knee, as with the keys dangling on the right, it would of been easy
for some one to snatch them
My first dash layout had the keys in the middle of the dash board, dangling, and would of been only a few journeys out and the dash would of been
ruined, also, the were only just above the gear lever, and interfered with changing gear

You can do a Keyless Ignition (RFID) and push button start for not much money.

Yep, one of those.
The image below (taken from the web) shows you what the Passat B6 dashboard looks like and where you push the key fob into a hole to the right of the
steering wheel. To start the engine you have to have the g/box in neutral and the clutch depressed then press the key fob fully into the dashboard
hole. Top stop the engine you press the key fob fully in again.
Note that the key fob is secrity coded to the vehicle so the engine should only start with the key fob specific to the vehicle. The vehicle is
supplied with 2 key fobs. If you have to replace a key fob you have to have them and the vehicle re-coded to match each other (learnt the hard way
through a SWMBO error).
Here's my Striker dash, I used a standard column mounted ignition switch (MK2 Escort) with my own brackets and mounted it in the center console
along with a cut off switch
I was going to make a sliding cover (off a VW) but didn't in the end
