Rover V8, well chuffed... until.... turn the crank and goes round, click, pertang, jammed.

Maybe a couple of broken teeth on the timing gears.
I seem to remember rover v8's having an issue with this.RPI do a kit to replace the gears.

Check the flywheel isnt obstructed.
When i turned over the cosworth i felt a knock, knock, knock clunk as i turned it, and i thought the worst, until i realised that i hadnt tightened
the flywheel bolts!! 
Sounds a bit ominous mate, have a check somebody just hasn't chucked any old spark plug in there to keep the bores dry.
Compression test maybe a starter for 10 for a knackered valve, not right so I'd be tearing it down by now but I think you're more sensible
than I so will be waiting for all the intelligent answers!

I would say this is a very low mileage engine that hasn't run for, ooo 20 years?
Don't think I'll go any further than to dig that turbo engine out from its hidy place.
Just need the parts now to mate it up to the Landrover transmission.

That doesn't look too promising atm mate.
It would be interesting to see further down the inards though.

If the cylider bores are not rusty then it may well just need a good cleen.
if the bores are rusty then may be a little bit of a problem. Mine looked worse thatn that at first.
now makes 200hp with lots of tourque

I'm not really into rebuilding engines...
My T16 4 pot makes 210bhp....
The only reason to put a rover V8 in a car is that you want a rover v8.
It will cost you the best part of £1000 to rebuild including carbs and ignition.
If you just want power then fit a modern engine..
Rover V8's do not make financial sense!!!

Oh lord. If the bores are okay then it might be a reasonable cost. If not, it'll probably cost you £1000 to fix it.

rv8,s cost lots to rebuild but are lovely sounding once youve thrown away the carbs and exhausts and cam and spend loads on new bits I rebuilt one
over 15 years ago and cost over a grand then its sat in a tr7 convertable in my one of my garages as it costs too much to run.

I'm not that fussed, it cost me £85 including a complete Landy trans.
Just been out there again, turning the front crank pulley which I suspects turns the crank theres no movement from the rockers and valve gear, that concludes the cam is not turning and the whole thing is f*cked!
It might be that the timing chain has snapped or the teeth stripped form the standard cog (nylon teeth!).
Even so it might not cost a fortune to rebuild - just depends on how much power you want/need. Mains, big ends & cam bearings can be found pretty
cheaply on Ebay - a standard RV8 cam costs about £60 and you can pick up an inlet manifold and SU carbs on Ebay for £15 - £20.
Get the heads off and have a proper look

Hi Steve , just back from hols and catching up- there's a guy near us who runs a Morgan and a variety of Range riovers ish vehicle. He puts
Toyota engines in to them but offered us a decent V8 engine a while back which he removed as head gasket was just starting to go, he was asking £150
ish which if it is still there could be a good option.

Buy another one, but spend a bit more on it. Mine was £500 (but it came with all the running gear from the RR.
3.9 injected and I'm hoping to go for a mot later

I would suspect that there's all sorts of nastyness going on down in the depths. The only way to find out is to get the heads off. Assuming all
the carb bolts come off easy its a 15 minute job to get a head off. Then you can have a look inside and see whats what.
I have a lot of Rover V8 parts knocking around here including a 3.5l crank which looks okay and some pistons that seem good. You can have them for
beer tokens.
On another note if you decide to bin the whole RV8 then I might be interested in the transmission you have depending on condition and type. U2U if
your interested.
