s2000 sump baffle ?

Hi, first post so hope its in the right place.

I am building a kit car for the road, track and perhaps the odd hill climb, using s2000 in a 800kg car so should go ok. We are on with modifying the chassis to make it handle etc and would like to keep it as simple as possibl. I am a little bit worried as to wether I should dry sump or not. In my opinion if I can insure the pick up pipe is always covered with oil I should be ok and £1200 better off. I would really like to baffle the existing sump and may be even put a couple of wings on it as like with the old 711m ford crossflow and pinto used. If I have a baffle and also a wing on each side, no gates or bits that can go wrong, if I ever get it on the track and it generates a bit of G force surely the wing would provide more oil to pick up pipe at that time even if only a bit. I dont really want just to over fill the sump as some suggest as this could cause problems i belive.

I have decided not to go dry sump, but have read lots of posts from s2000 chaps saying a baffle is a good idea, but has anyone made a winged sump or know where I can buy the baffle plate. PS I have no problem with the height of engine also.

Hi Thanks, Ive seen that kit and like it, but can't find one for s2000 sump. I'm not too sure of engine codes, but that's not s2000.

I need one for F20C like in picture.

What do the wings do Jacko? Just increase capacity slightly or do they have other benefits? Would be nice to know

Just to increase capacity really, which in theory should also help with cooling the oil. Also when the oil wants to crawl up the side of the sump under lateral G force and away from the pick up pipe the oil from the opposite wing move's across and should increase the oil level at that time then move back into the side wing under normal conditions, so more oil when needed or that’s the theory.

I have the same issue with my S2000 engined Dax Rush at the moment.
Spoon, Mugen etc have all welded a baffle plate in a standard honda pan and resell them for ~£400 which is a joke considering all you actually need is the ali baffle plate, your old sump and a tig welder to secure it.

To dry sump the engine will cost more than an entire used engine (£>2k) by the time you include the pan, pump, tank, plumbing and remote filter head etc so its out of the question and the accusump seems fundamentally flawed in several ways, not least is the fact that it will dump all its oil reserve into the sump at idle which is potentially destructive.
A compromise would be a well designed pan with a baffle and wings but no-one has made one for the S2000 yet - if that was available for ~£500 then it would be perfect.

Well it don't look like anyone making one so I will have to make my own. I gona wait until engine is in the chassis then I can measure up for the baffle position and angle also make sure the wings don't get in the way of anything.

Made a sump tank for s2000, holds just under 1.5 pints and fits where s2000 has crossmember or rack (can’t remember which). Anyway increases sump capacity and when cornering works like wings as only a hole through to main sump at either side. It hasn't warped much as I made tank first then had it welded to the sump

I'm on with making a better one, but think cos more welding I will have to have it faced.

Should work with your extra tank, too.

Personally, I'm not sure if it's absolutely necessary, perhaps unless running very sticky tyres. You get mixed messages from the internet - those claiming that the engine must be baffled for track use, or those who have successfully competed and raced with a stock sump with no issues.

Touchwood - I've had no problems yet with the Rush, admittedly on boggo Toyo T1R - and I'm not the fastest track driver either! That said, I might be tempted to fit this baffle plate over the next winter lay-up for peace of mind.

(The internet will also tell you that you have to dry sump the S2000 engine to fit it into a Se7en type car - and, of course, all Honda engines turn the wrong way.... don't they? )

Yea I have purchased one of those sump baffles, but need to check all angles out before I have it spot welded in. I have read somewhere that they should be set about 12mm above oil height. My thoughts are as long as the pick up pipe is under oil then no worries, so by having more oil capacity without raising the oil level and by using just two holes to link the tank (plus breather) it floods the whole contents of the auxiliary tank almost directly to the pick up pipe on either left or right handers. Dry sump not fail safe either. I know of bottom crank pulley coming loose on dry sump pump, belt off and whoop’s. I personally believe that if some track boys are getting away with standard sump a few careful modifications should help.

Got the sump finished, well nearly cos it needs a skim to get it flat again as it warped with welding. It hold 1.5 litres extra now without raising oil level. Hope it works. Any idea about cost's for getting it skimmed/faced. Cheers.

What year of Sk2 is you engine sourced from, as if it's before 2004 is maybe worth while whilst you have the sump off to check your oil jet banjo bolts to ensure they are the updated 4-hole variety and not the older 2 hole ones.

They were updated to 4 holes are a result of the oil starvation issues around 2003/2004 which could lead to No4 cylinder being badly scored.

My donor s2000 engine is AP2 2007 so I believe it will be ok, but I am on with a stroker 2400 engine and the s2000 block I have lined up is very early so I will need to do the upgrade. I need an honda acura nsx crank and some other bits. What parts are needed for the oil spray jets/bolts & what cost?

Can the bores be glaze busted or even re-bored and if so by how much as I believe they are coated. Cheers in advance.
