mk pinto to zetec conversion - how much?

as title really, times they are a changing and i'm getting bored. how much would i need to spend to swap to a 2.0 zetec in my indy? time to carry out conversion isn't a problem but finances could be! weighing it up, fit a zetec or sell up all together really.

the first major is that the exhaust is on the other side, so either you wil have a big hole in your bonnet from the old pinto exhaust - however, if you went throttle bodies on the zetec, i guess you coudl make the old hole bigger and make an intake for them.

you can keep your existing gearbox and stuff like that, so its just a case of changing the engine, the engine mounts and stuff like that...

looks like you are running carbs, so if you dont want to change the fuel lines down the car you could stick some carbs on the side of the zetec.

A zetec will not cost much - 2lt are quite easy to find. then you will need to change the flywheel to a 1.8 escort on ( mondeo is dual mass? ) and change the water pump to a 1.8 escort one.

i fitted a 1.8 zetec 130bhp from an escort in mine, with the EFi system cause i have done them before and i think they are easy to fit. however some people dont like injection systems because they are more involved in plumbing it all in , but its your choice.

the most of your money will go on an exhaust ( prob £500 for stainless steel header and silencer - tube exhausts is a very good place ) and the induction ( carbs , or custom injection ) unless you stick with the ford EFi.

I like the ford Efi. its smooth and very reliable ( in my experience ) and easy to wire in.

or fit a duratec, bodge the exhaust from the pinto and fit a tb's megasquirt.

Hey John, but you just sold your intake and webers, why change the pinto?

I have found a vauxhaul 2.0L which I am also considering instead, I know they are plentyfull in the UK.

When I converted my Fury from a xflow to a zetec the major costs were:

2.0 Silvertop zetec: £200
New exhaust manifold: £220
Jenvey throttle bodies: <A lot>
Innovate LC-1 wideband sensor: £130
Chopped zetec sump (Scholar): £190
Lightened and redrilled flywheel: £100

Other bits and pieces you need can add up to a significant amount..

I already had a megasquirt which is running the engine. I have not added it all up, but I think I probably spent over £2000 converting from the xflow on 40's to a zetec on fuel injection.

basically finances are a bit up and down as is my interest in the car, as you know from when you came here the car is still at my folks house which means it's hard for me just to pop out to tinker but if i set about a major transformation then i got all the excusses i need to spend some time with it.

Before you take out the engine, do some homework and research. The zetec is the cheaper option but if you leave it with the standard EFi, then I doubt you will see more power than you had with your pinto with the carbs and FR32 cam.
Since you're going to be spending the money anyway I'd have a look at the vauxhaul 2.L XE.

And in the meantime... Drive the car around (if its not raining) you should enjoy it more that way rather than looking at it in a garage.
