he must mean an X20XEV ecotec they came in 1.8

C20 XE was the original redtop engine in Mk2&3 Astra, Cavalier, Calibra.

X18XEV is the later version of the 16V engine, a 1.8 'ecotec'. X20XEV was the two litre equivelant.
