The Maplins one (if they're the yellow handled ones) are very good and dont heat up the handle while you're using it and burn your hands. the cheaper versions tend to, and the solder is rubbish, spits everywhere and doesn't make a good joint.
I'd rather pay a bit more for a decent iron and solder than a cheap kit myself. Used to hate using the crappy one at work so much I used to bring my own in if I needed to do anything and put the job off for a day

tbh anything is better than the 40w spade iron and plumbers gas solder that we currently have in the garage!

I bought a 15w and went back for a 25w one because I liked the 15w that much.

A Weller TCP is the one the Pro's use, interchangable bits of various sizes and heat ranges, i have 3 of them one with a de-soldering attachment , i've had them for years.
They do come up on ebay from time to time.

What he said. I've had mine (TCP 2) for over 15 years and still on the original tip.
Best iron in the world. Tiny iron but temperature controlled tip. Delivers 45W as required.
I have soldered four ends of 2.5 solid together, no problem.

Tell them about the bent treacle edges!
