Are you buying the number, or the car that it is on ? The law is very vauge here, is this number on retention ?
If I was called Rebecca, I'd be pissed if anyone called me BEC!

Although i have a friend (actaully Rebekah) who ofen goes by the name Bex
And one of my current housemates Becky/Rebecca has #~~~ BEX on her plate.

Theres tons of BEC plates on the dvla and other websites, very common.

The majority of BEC's seem to be on Q plates due to the difficulty on getting an age related plate so it's not possible to transfer a
cherished plate onto most of them. The rest seem to be new reg, so an older plate may look naff
