2002 Maserati 4.2 V8 engine...
Yeah, it's time for another pointless-but-exotic-and-not-all-that-ridiculously-priced engine find... this time eBay treated me with a Maserati
V8 engine... I know absolutely nothing about these engines, but according to
this review the engine should produce around 390 Hp.. apparently it was
co-developed by Ferrari, too..
Finding a suitable transmission will probably be your worst nightmare.. Also, I have no idea how big these engines are, or how much they weigh..
probably not very locost friendly at all.. but maybe for the middy guys
Finally, as with all pointless-but-exotic-and-not-all-that-ridiculously-priced engines I post; You have to admit saying you've got a Maserati
engine sounds a hell of a lot sexier than admitting to be propelled by an ordinary Ford or Vauxhall lump..
Link to eBay listing - Curent bid is 2000 quid. Likely to skyrocket soon though.

I had a maserati 3200GT for a couple of years, that produced 370 bhp, it was fantastic!! I think, but not 100% that the gearbox was over the rear
axles.
Great car, I miss it
Would probably break a locost chassis.

I think it's derived from the Ferrari 355 engine, so should come with quite a sound track!
Would go great in something like a GD T70!

Well, there was that locost on pistonheads some time ago with a 600HP Chevy V8 squeezed in it... This engine can't possibly be bigger/heavier
than that!

i don't think it weigh's too much, i'm pretty sure it's all aluminium. The 4.2 is naturally aspirated and the 3.2 was twin
turbo, which is very nice!

Apparently the NA version delivers some 20 Hp more than the turbocharged version..

More boost = more lag
Also: with a turbo engine, you'd have to figure out where to place the intercooler and all the piping.. not a good thing if you want to fit it
in a small car.. the V8 engine is large enough as it is..

It shares the same block as the F430, comes with a dry sump system as standard, gives 390 hp in its emmision strangled state and weighs very little as
its all aluminium. With individual throttle bodies and an aftermarket ecu, i reckon 450hp should be easily achievable. Only real hurdle is it has vvt
which might need a bit of head scratching to get round. If anyone fancies it, make sure you get ALL the ancilliaries to make it run, as parts from
eurospares are fairly eye watering.
Iv'e got one sat in the corner of my garage as a future project, along with a 997 6 speed gearbox.

the still twin turbo or supercharge an all alloy lexus 4.0L v8 and have a bit of durability added, with probably more power the italian engine can
handle. not to say its weak, the lexus is just incredibly strong and cheap as chips.
