My dead RX8 on the bay

Sadly I am finally selling my rx8 which has been sat whilst I got over the hump and plucked up the courage to sell it. I think these are truly great cars to drive (no point arguing with me because I agree with a lot of the negatives, but as a whole package, they're great fun and fantastic for the money). Only problem is that it lunched itself immediately after I moved and could not afford the rebuild myself only to be stuck then with what is not a cheap car to run, when I really needed my money spare for home improvements.

Car has therefore been sat for a few months but was in perfect working order with brand new Cat, coils, plugs and leads (looking at a couple of grand in parts) which were installed only a month before the engine died. There is a longer story about all of that but essentially I was lead up the garden path by the garage re compression readings and money was spent that shouldn't have been.

However, that does mean that there's plenty of cash in the car if someone has the time and facilities to break it; or it'd be a great car to pick up cheaply and throw a rebuilt engine in whether doing that yourself or using one of the specialists.

Sadly, I don't have the time or facilities to really mess around with it myself otherwise I'd be breaking or rebuilding it myself but as I can't get the rx8 in my new garage nevermind work on it in there that's really never going to fly.

rx8 on the bay linky

Please someone buy it before I have enough money for the rebuild, I have dreams about it!

If I had a spear garage and some time I would have this off you, but have enough trouble at the mo with rebuilding my pinto engine good luck with the sale though.

cheers guys, fingers crossed ebay help me get rid of it as it's thoroughly depressing having it here and not able to do anything with it myself!

I'd much rather see someone with the time or money come along, rebuild and get it going again. Hell, I'd be perfectly happy if the buyer broke it and sold the bits, at least they'd be of use in working cars rather than just sitting and gathering dust.

Cars are for driving!

Hmmm tempting, what exactly killed it? Seal failure? Catastrophic failure?

Hi

Suspected main bearing failure. Cut out whilst driving, spins on the starter but won't fire; oil leak from rear of block. I had been unhappy with the engine not feeling 100% occasionally for the previous few weeks but the garage assured me that everything was fine with the engine and I just had to replace all the ancillaries... This turned out to be a terrible lie and one I wouldn't have fallen for had I not been so busy with work at the time and in need of a car!

Although I was not given this information at the time (don't ask why, I'm not allowed to tell) the compression figures were also just under Mazda recommended figures just before the failure. Although right up until it failed it started quickly both hot and cold - which makes me think the previous set of ancillaries were absolutely fine too....

Definitely wouldn't trust anyone but a rotary specialist with one of these in the future (and I mean a company specialising only in rotaries, not a main dealer!).

Not had the engine completely apart but either way with these cars it's an engine out and rebuild jobby. The specialist rebuilders offer 2 or 3 year warranties but frankly the engine should be good for another 10 years plus if you get it rebuilt properly and look after it as the amount of information about how to best maintain these engines is now a lot better.

If I could afford it as a second car I'd keep it myself, it'd be better than new with a properly rebuilt engine! Looks like a DIY rebuild shouldn't be too hard if you've got space for it. They look like very simple engines once you get them out the car. No valves, tappets, etc.

Don't want to dampen your hopes, but as someone who has been watching knackered rx8's for a while, I think you need to halve your BIN.

Good luck regardless

I'm a realist Simon, the reserve is less but I figure that if you don't ask, you don't get. Plus I have been watching knackered rx8s for some months too, they tend to be FUBAR and with little to redeem them. This one has a lot more going for it than most and would be an ideal base for a very nice car. As I say, worst comes to the worst I'll rebuild it later in the year and enjoy it myself again but I was hoping to get rid and stop dreaming about it!

I have receipts and paperwork for all the recent parts etc. It's worth a grand even for someone that's got one already and wants some spares before weighing in the shell! Trouble is I'm not sure that many people are too keen on the RX8 at all, they're just a bit too expensive on petrol to really enjoy.

I think the RX8 is quite desirable (search for my posts on them in the past) and ideal as the basis for a project - but the price has to be right.

It's actually one of around 3 or 4 cars I'm thinking about at the moment for that very purpose, and it'll be getting a diesel engine, not just to annoy the purists, but also because I can't see the point in having an engine that does 20mpg, when it could be doing 50 or so, with not a lot of difference in performance.

Sadly, I still need to finish my garage/porch extension before I could consider anything so can't make you a derisory offer

Hope you at least get close to what you want.

Cheers

Cheers Simon,

Well I hope you give that a go once you've finished with the excuses! (I jest)

I won't judge you for your choice of engine, modern diesels are pretty amazing although if money were no object (a ridiculous notion as plainly I am trying to shift this car rather than spend more money on it!) I'd stick wankels in everything!

There seems to be a little interest so far but we'll see what happens next week. I'll be a little disappointed if it does sell although at this point keeping it really wouldn't be a good plan for me. I'll get another wankel once they work out how to make them defy physics entirely by providing good power through a wide rev range whilst also being light, compact, reliable and fuel efficient! I just need a magic lamp and that'll be one of my 3 wishes.

I hate to bump this to the top - most of you will not be interested - but FYI;

after being let down, verbally abused and finally threatened by the previous top bidder on ebay who decided he didn't want the car but he also really didn't want me to leave bad feedback(!); I've had to relist:

Fingers crossed for an improved experience of ebay in the future!
