they suffer with bottom end problems.

Yeah they do but if you catch them early you can sometimes get away with just dropping the sump and fitting new shells.

Mine was just starting to knock every so slightly around the time I sold it.

The SR20DET doesn't suffer with the same big end problems but they do often have a rattle from the VVT actuator which isn't actually a problem just annoying.
