Zetec clutch TO-brearing how much travel to disengage?
Hi All,
I'm in the process of swapping a renault box and Ford Zetec together.
I have determined the thickness of the adapterplate, based on the length of the inputshaft and spigot bearing at 23mm.
I have figured out that I have about 12mm of maximum travel in the throwout bearing. Normaly the NG3 box has 20mm but the zetec clucth spring fingers
and Renault TO bearing have a gap of 8mm.
I can adjust the slack out of the system by adjusting the cable length, but would like to know if the 12mm's are enough to fully disengage the
clutch. (IE: I push the clutch spring fingers in by 12mm is this enough?)
I think I'll be OK but am just not sure.
Who can help me out?
I have the possibility to lengthen the TO bearing retainer but that's one hell of a job (...let's just say the design is french...)
Also how thick is a ford zetec 1800 to gearbox "dirtplate" whatsitcalled (the plate that sits between the bellhouse and engine....)

Ive made three or four out of 16swg so about 1.5mm. I know others have made them out of as thin as 1mm. I am sure standard was around 1.2~1.5mm.

The plates are not very thick - couple of mm
If your using a mondeo type clutch theyre low lift
They dont need much thrust to clear
If youve got a pillar drill bolt the clutch ass to the flywheel,place the bearing on top
Then put the chuck against the bearing and depress it slowly
You can then physically how much it takes to clear by using a small drift to try to move the drive plate as you depress the fingers
The point at which it moves is disengaged

I hapen to have 2 pillar drills, one small one huge! I could have thought of that myself!

And the magic number is..... 7mm to disengage. and 9mm total SAFE travel.
At about 11 mm the spring touches the inner splined part of the clutch disc.
if the disc wear the spring sits higher, so I'm in the clear with my setup!
dead easy to do indeed, depth readout on the milling machine is once again very helpfull!

Hi. I'm interested in doing the same thing. Mating a Zetec engine to an NG3 gearbox. How easy was it? Nice and straightforward or lots of
nasty surprises?
