gift ideas for 66yr old dad?

Hi
Just throwing this out there, struggling to find something for my old man rather than the novelty socks!
He's been a car/any engineering kind of nut all his life and consequently has a very comprehensive retirement shed and doesn't need any tools.his health isnt up to any fast type, as in track/air related red letter days.was thinking of an offroading type day, but looking into that they seem pretty lame compared to what he used to do back in his landrover days. He's rebuilt his gilbern and just about finished a wooden clock he built from scratch.
His next project is to make a small scale v6 engine from scratch so ive been trawling the tinterweb for some kind of book or something related to that, or something gilbern related.
Cant find anything whatsoever so im open to ideas. Amusing novelty ones if need be but id rather get the man who has everything hes interested in already, something usefull for less than a ton!

Cheers

Chris

Probably take him to a decent event, something like FoS or maybe Silverstone Classic? Spending time with you may be something he would prefer to a gift.....especially if it is a mutual interest, and there is some decent scoff and drink?

Go drifting at Oulton Park or similar and stop off at a decent pub on the way home

Good idea - there's a firm in the Lakes with a Frog Eye and a Big Healey!

As someone of similar age to all the above - I'm jealous - wish my kids would do any of the above - although for my 60th my daughter got me a track day in a Lamborghini - that took some beating

Hello,

i am only 42 year old, and this year i received a lambo experience that i will make this week-end ( it will be raining).
i am not sure that i will apreciate to ride such a car on a track with a guy next to me that won't let me push the throttle.

2 years ago , i received an acrobatic fly experience.
until now , this were the most impressive 15 minutes in myall life.
so much more then diving, driving a fast bike or driving fast cars on a track day.

i hope to receive another one when i will get older...

Dad drifts his gilbern with ease but gets frustrated he gets tired too quick, so is aware he couldn't give a day in a lambo or anything similar the abuse the session costs.im pretty sure most "driving experience days" you can buy will omly remind him what he can't do anymore but thanks for the suggestions.as for hiring a car, I haven't got the money to hire him one that he hasn't driven back when they were sh*te.think the only car he hasn't driven that he'd like to is a healy 3000 and they re pricey to hire.keep the suggestions coming. Im not the fussy one, the old man is!

any gift you give him will be immeasurable he would probably love to have his portrait done with his kids so each day he can look at them and cherish the moment sometimes its not the size or the enormity of the gift its the thought that goes into it. If my old man was still around I would have a day out with him chew the fat have some beers and a picture for both to cherish. I didn't get the chance but hindsight is a wonderful thing

If he's more interested in looking at cars etc than doing something from the drivers seat. Pop him over to anglesey on either 2nd or 3rd May to watch he sprinting. There's a decent resteraunt on site, loads of access around the paddock and some great viewing points around the circuit

My mate Dan has just started this business. He'll laser engrave any object onto anodised aluminium most of which he does are car, bike, engineering type stuff.

He can personalise with reg numbers, vin numbers, personal greetings etc.

I've seen several in the flesh and they are fantastic.

Have one done of the Gilbern perhaps. Might be worth a look at?

There are all sorts of car trials events. It's friendly and accessible. Perhaps if you make contact with a club and do some telephone and email legwork, arranging on his behalf, then without spending any money you might find you can get him a ride as a participating passenger in a competition not too far from home.

Here's one for example but you can find loads - http://www.btrda.com/Car_Trials/article_1329.php

Some classic car clubs have their own trials events - pre-war austin seven club for example.

Not exactly an off the shelf gift but with a bit of effort it might be a fun day out?

Might be worth looking at the Porsche Experience providing funds aren't too critical. linky
Having been on one of their Cayman days they really look after guests (three course lunch from their in-house master chef).
When driving the "consultants " really encourage you to find the vehicles limits (unlike some where revs and activity are limited). I can't imagine off-road will be anything less than fulfilling.
Certainly it sticks out in my mind as a very memorable, enjoyable day.
Cheers, Pewe10
