The word is that many JDM engines have not at all been looked after. Being that they have to be off the road in Japan after 5 years anyways, maintenance is sketchy. I'm not saying that THESE haven't been well taken care of, of course.

I would ask them if I could pull the sump - if it's full of sludge then likely oil changes have been ignored and you can make a more informed decision. Although at 30000 miles most probably not a serious problem so long as oil levels were kept up.

These are really good strong motors so can take a fair amount of abuse.

I have seen them cheaper than that. Try;

Or I looked into importing one directly from Japan. But didn't get too far with my search though but probably can be done.

Let me know how you get on.

I usually buy from Fensport and have bought several engines from them. However that is a very good price as it seems to include all the ancilliaries and wiring connectors which is quite important. Does it include the ECU though as otherwise you'll need a programmable one.

The one in the picture is from an automatic transmission so you won't get a useable flywheel. Both the Silvertop and Blacktop have very light flywheels compared to the 16V so figure that in the cost.

Ivan you're right about them being coked up iniside. The last one I bought was so black you'd have thought the head was made from pig iron! Cleaned up very nicely though if you're prepared to strip the engine down.

The bottom ends are factory balanced to a high standard and mine verified this. couldn't say the same of my expensive Fidanza flywheel though

Not sure where you heard that!
Every jap car I've imported has been spot on mechnically. They don't have to be off the road after 5 years, they can stay on the road for as long as you have a valid Shaken (MOT). The issue is that the Shaken gets more expensive the older the car gets which is why most imports are 3, 5, 7, 9 etc years old. A friend living in Japan has a 10 year old RX7 that he won't sell, mind you neither would I having seen it!

Not looking to buy a 20v, was just seeing if there were many on ebay. Picking up a 16v next week hopefully to rebuild.

They seem good engines the 20v is 160bhp standard or so ive read somewhere. Would the VVC system cause many problems with a aftermarket ecu?

I was thinking about a set of bike throttle bodies and megasquirt on a 16v and maybe a pair of cams.

I've got a set of GSXr T/B's on my 16v engine used along with an Omex 500 ECu which work well together. New up-graded cams seem expensive (from RAW + others) and don't offer much more BHP than the cost of a 20v engine, unless anyone can tell me different of course as it's a route I would like to explore myself rather than having to ditch what I've already done (so to speak).
