Help - things to do in Amsterdam

Right, off to Amsterdam for a few days. Anyone got any suggestion of things to do (and i'm taking a girl with me so no suggestions involving ladies and a red light!).

Dog's egg capital of Europe, enjoy

You can play 'spot the brit on his stag night throwing up' most days.

On a more helpful note this should help.

Sex museum is amusing if she has a broad mind and a sense of humour nudge nudge

I'll have to go some day friends say it's fab

I wonder if I'll get in trouble posting this but one friend drove down for a holiday and when he came back I noticed that his cars rear suspension looked like it had collapsed, hmm so I asked him how that happened. Turned out the car was fine, the boot was totally loaded up with porn mags that he then sold on and made a tidy sum from his effort. I of course did not buy any of the filth...

There is also some Boedist temple somewhere across the Chinese restaurants. You will see lots of bikes parked of the side of the road, they are free to use for everyone. If you're unable to free the lock just ask a local and give him 10 Euro's.

I lived there for 2 years, loads to do even avoiding the sex and drug industry.

Rijks Museum
Anne Franks House - queues can be horrific
Kinder Dyke - outside of the city
Zaandvort - 15 minutes on a tram and a lovely beach to boot as is Haarlem
Some great restaurants as well especially if you like Indo Chinese
20 minutes away is Den Haag a beautiful city way nicer than Amsterdam.

Happy to give you some restaurant tips.

We went at this time of year and it was bl**dy cold so top of the list would be to take the thermals (no kid).
Canal trip around the sites first - saves walking and helps with the layout
Bus trip from the centre took in the Flower Market (no tulips at this time of year), Delft for porcelain and a quick whip around the Hague.
Find a Javanese restaurant (area to the South of the Centre) for very spicey but delicious food e.g. Mackerel cooked in Banana leaves with a scorchio sauce.
The Botanical Gardens (indoors) kept the better half happy and watching Six Nations in an Irish pub was memorable.

Enjoy.
Cheers, Pewe.

At 49 years old I don't get called a "Dear Boy" very often...well only by my Dad (who's 72 and rides a Cagiva Raptor).
When I was studying for my degree in Fine Art in the early 80s, we went there on a college trip for a week of "artistic enlightenment". I can assure you that the "ladies" on my course were willing to experience EVERYTHING that Amsterdam had to offer . Some even joined in...

Crikey, that explains why there were so many smacked-up, single mother Fine Art graduates that year...

Me and the Mrs are off there at the end of next week - also to look round the galleries (she also has a fine art degree!)....

Pants on fire - some restaurant recommendations would be great (going to Paris after 4 days in Amsterdam, so nothing French!!)

We went into the Rijks Museum when we visited Amsterdam - I was totally gobsmacked by the quality of the Dutch portraits by the masters.

Also, as a Terry Pratchett fan, I wanted to see The Night Watch painting. Well worth seeing, 'cos it's huge, and beautifully painted. Didn't see Nobby giving a V-sign though... (obscure Pratchett reference).

Amsterdam is overrated...

If the misses wants to have some fun take her to the P.C. hooftstraat or the Kalverstraat. You might see some serious hardware on wheels your self. Most of the other things are very touristic. (but then again you prob. are!!) There is however a part called the "jordaan". This it a part of Amsterdam filled with little pubs / restaurants where there is dutch live music. (that part is nice in the evening) .

If you want my advice:

Take a train to Rotterdam (1/2 hour) or Breda (1 hour). and take a city tour or a water cab, shop in the center and go to "oude haven"..

marcel.

Got back tuesday night.

Had a fab time. Walked loads and seemed to see everything. The Rijks Museum was excellent and inspired me a little with my photography. Went from there to the Bol's experience - if you like cocktails its worth the 10 euro entrance for the free drink at the end. Unfortunately that set the tone for rest of the day/evening and we rolled into the hotel a number of cocktails later.

Anne Franks museum was interesting.

Took us two days to find the red light district - in England it would have brown tourist board signs!

Oh food - fantastic, amazed how many Argentinian steak houses there where, but they know how to cook a lump of beef.
