Co2 regulators and adapters
zilspeed - 29/11/08 at 12:38 PM

Now got the gas supply sorted for the TIG setup, but really can't afford another cylinder for the MIG, so I am probably going to go for straight CO2.

The spare regulator I have here is an Argon / Argon- CO2 mix one with the captive female nut for a standard BOC / AP cylinder.

Using pub cylinders uses the opposite, a captive male nut with the cylinder being female.

I kow that you can get an adapter and was thinking of one I have seen in the machine mart catalogue, but I have a suspicion that this adapter might be the exact opposite to what I need.

Does anyone know ?

I'm looking to fit argon guages to a CO2 cylinder, does the machine mart do this or does it work the other way.

(I do understand the whole pressure difference thing with cylinders, so I reckon my 300 Bar guages will be ok with 50 Bar.)

You can get them on ebay but its going to be cheaper to get a new gauge ?

Yep, saw that one.
As you correctly say, a new regulator makes much more sense, I was just hoping that the macine mart Adaptor Argon to CO2 to quote their catalgue, for £6.45 would do the job.

Nope thats like this one

That'll be my answer then.

New regulator.

P.S. Please please keep me posted about that other thing too. no U2U is bad news this morning

re regulator,

Put a wanted up on here, I gave one away when I went onto to argon.

Talk to your friendly landlord he may have an 'old' regulator

It's on rare occasions like these that I regret never having been a drinker.

Not even a little bit.

As such, I don't actually have a friendly landlord.

I use straight CO2 pub bottles for my MIG and they have a male thread on the cylinder, I have a captive female nut on the regulator.

Its the mixed gasses that have female threads on the bottle surely?

You can get co2 cylinders with male or female thread, beer ones are male and welding ones are female. I found a couple of cylinders dumped and swap them at a local diy place for £15 but they don't run out that often.

Fire extinguishers are also female fitting so another reason to use one, as a standard argon gauge screws straight in.

That sort of doesn't tie in with these pics here though.

Now that really confuses me.

Yes your correct actually, thinking about it my bottles came from an industrial plumbed in system and must have different valves fitted.Im sure that you can get adaptors from machine mart etc that have a female thread at each end though, these allow a standard reg to be used I think it is an oxygen reg that is fitted to my bottle at present. The only slight problem with extingushers is that they have a dip tube and supply liquid to the reg which can cause it to freeze if it is turned up to high.
