I may be looking to upgrade to a bigger band saw.

Looking for a single phase jobbie that takes a 3/4" ( or 1" ) blade and maybe has hydraulic control of the cut speed.

I've trawled the net but can only find sites with no prices
The make that keeps turning up is Sealey, but I've never been that impressed with their stuff.

PVR Direct do the SM35CE for £768 but again, it's a Sealey.


Anyone know of a good make?
Anything second hand?
Anyone used a pull down type?


Any help will be much appreciated.

I've been through this one as well!!

I came to the conclusion that the only answer was a used 3 phase one and put a 3 hp single phase motor on it.

PS we have one of those sealey £750 ish jobbie saws at work and its junk.

They got it for doing mitring jobs in the maintainance shop so that people would stop fiddling with the vice angle on the big saw and not re-setting it up dead square, but it is so shite they still use the big saw!

My problem is space. I need something compact as my workshop is only 6 x 3m and it's already full of gear.

I did think of a cut off saw, but it's difficult to get anything odd shaped into them. e.g. cut a 2" bend in half to make two 45's.

I've wanted a good bandsaw for some time so I bought a Startrite floor standing bandsaw before Christmas fron Ebay, a bargain at £225.
I run it from a phase converter but it would be really simple to put a single phase motor in one.
Also bought some blades from Ebay from one of those places that will make them to length and any quality (£20 ea.). Cuts everything now including stainless bar, but I also have one of the generic horizontal bandsaws for bar material so as to preserve the big saw's bades.

I have middle of the road upright bandsaw for wood in the workshop, works fine when u put a metal blade in it as long as u dont go too fast when u r shoving the steel through it Those rage saws are also handy and at the right price too, far better than a chop saw, Steve got us one for xmas and I reckon its paid for itself already, cuts everything wood, plastic, ali, skin and bone
gloves, goggles and ovies are a must

Thanks very much for the replies chaps but its really a horizontal band saw for cutting tube that I'm after.

The pic below shows what I wish to replace with something bigger.
It works fine, but my future plans involve something that will cut a little quicker.
The noise factor rules out chop saws etc.

I would look at a 3ph ones.
- If you can find a good one, then just run it through an 3ph inverter.
