Emergency! Anyone near luton with a hydraulic bearing press?
cloudy - 17/3/09 at 09:26 PM

I've found the problem with my brakes, its a bearing thats not been fully seated in the ally hubs causing runout on the front offside disc... I have SVA next weds and I really need someone with a press I can badger for 15mins...

If you have a lathe too that would be better (press bearings out and clean out any burrs from the seating surface)

Willing to travel a bit as this is an emergency - the ally hubs bloke seems to have disappeared...

I have a lathe , but no press..........how about heating the hub / freezing the bearing ?
That what I do in these situations.....

How big is the chuck? Could you not use the tailstock as a press??

it's going to need some serious pressure, the bearing is already in so no heat differential options, I think I really need the proper tool on this one...

Actually still a possibilty. If the heat/cold can be applied quickly enough it may well work. Cold could be freezing spray as usd by plumbers, not too sure about the heat though

Trouble is the bearing doesn't consist of much material and its surrounded by one of the best heat conductors you could think of!!

But alloy also expands a lot faster and at a greater rate than steel!!
Set it on the lathe, douse in several buckets of boiling water and get turning! Don't stop. PMA!!

I don't have a lathe I have a feeling it's burred the seating face as its been whacked in, it feels down - but it's not. Only craploads of pressure or removing and reinserting are going to sort

If the bearing is in that tight - the only trick I know for getting it out without damaging the hub is to run a generous bead of weld around the inner race , it will shrink the bearing as it cools , then it will just drop out (works a treat on valve seats in ally heads)
Makes a mess of the bearing though ...... but then bearings are cheaper than hubs !
