Repairing Exhast
dhutch - 22/5/09 at 07:40 PM

After removing all the exhast wrap around the 4-2 collectors and finding nothing ive now found a big section of failed weld around the 2-1 collector on the underside (why didnt i think of that!).
- Its fractured about half way round, on the weld where one of the two join the collector.

Obviously it needs something doing to it, but give that the rest of it looks in good nick (its stainless) im after get it repaired.

Any suggestions of where to take it. Local fabrication shop?

any local fab shop / welder should be able to do it for you, You may need to look at the exhaust mounting it may be that there is not enough movement and a softer mount is required. (food for thought)

Is it a small enough crack to wack some exhaust goo in there???

If your re wraping it then just weld it up with a mig

Fiar enough.

The crack in the 4-2 i would be happy to goo if anyone thinks it would hold as its otherwise sound. However the joint on the 2-1 is as i say split about half way around the collector, so something structural is needed i think.

The 2-1 wont be wraped, but its also on the underside, so doesnt need to look supper tidy. Although not rusting would be good.

Supportwise, ive wondered this too. The manifold ofcause totally rigid to the engine, with the single joint between it and the can (about leval with the front of the scuttle) also basicaly rigid. Theres then a single soft rubber bobbin holding the end of the pipe.
The engines fairly rigidly mounted (stiff rubber mounts) but obviously does move, and partiularly at very low speed when cold etc i can get up a good shake which must give the joint in question and others a fair old time.
- Not sure what people usally do here?
A flex join between can and manifold wouldnt seam stupid, but wouldnt look pretty and isnt something ive ever seen on any other cars?

This is the exhast system in question.
- Wraped from head to exit, 4-2's in down pipes, wraped, 2-1 outside, unwraped. Joint. Stright to can. Rubber bobin.

Wasting your time with goo, its fractured for a reason, goo will just drop out.

Anyone with a TIG and stainless rods can weld it up, also anyone with a mig although the weld will rust.

You need to make sure they drill a small hole at each end of the split and fill with weld to stop it growing, this acts as a barrier.
