Spraying 2k
IanBrace - 17/6/09 at 05:43 PM

Hi, I'll hopefully soon be ready to put some paint on. I've decided to use 2k. It's years since I've had a go a spraying anything bigger than the headlight bowls..
Anyone got any tips that you'd care to share with a novice!
A mate has offered to do it for me (for beer vouchers) but i really want to have a go myself.
Thanks

A pressure fed mask must be used

air fed masks are the way to go, but have a word with you paint supplier, mine showed me a mask which was not air fed, but is fully certified for 2k paint.

I always just use one of these.

Sprayed with 2K lots of times and never had an issue with me dropping dead. Just make sure there is also some ventilation.

Also, I don't think 2K is available any more. was phased out last year i think. Most places use water based paint now.

2k is still available and always will be. As far as i know water based is only used for base coat metalic but you still need a solvent based laquer on top or the rain will just wash the paint off your car!

you can still buy 2k its celulose that they are trying to fase out.

you will also notice that all shops selling car paint now have to list the voc content of all their products on the reciept so body shops can keep a record.

This is the problem stuff in 2k paints

if using 2k make sure the first coat is a guide coat dont try to covet the car allow to go tacky then apply paint evenly.

Its essential that you mix correctly with the activator. If it goes wrong you have to wait ariund 2 weeks before you can overpaint as you will get a reaction, unlike cellulose which can be flatted and repainted in the same day. You also need to ensure you have a constant pressure at the gun otherwise you will end up with the orange peel effect.

Thanks guys, I was really after spraying tips rather than not killing myself tips! I'll probably go down that route after I've cocked it up!
