sticking magnets to prop or driveshaft

Hi all, whats the best stuff to use, when fixing the little round magnets to the prop shaft bolts or the drive shaft,so the sensor can pick up a signal for the speedo.

I used araldite for mine. the non quick dry stuff.

I put a blob on then put the magnet in let it set a little then put a blob over the top.

not lost 1 yet and its been about 8 months.

Not sure if it's the best stuff but I used Araldite. They haven't fallen off yet

Steve (Worx) did mine, he bonded them on - cant remember what with, but then put gaffer tape over them, one peice right round the prop - its worked very well at keeping them on. Seems a great idea.

When I whipped a couple off the other day I put the tape back on as seems to be doing a cracking job.

Isn't that going to put the prop out of balance?

They are very small. I have one on mine and can't tell it's there.

I also used slow setting epoxy and some tape.

how about something like this? You could bolt it on with an extra long propshaft bolt. I'm sure a search on google will find a uk supplier.

UK supplier linky

I used epoxy metal. Nothing moving them once well attached! They are still stuck despite my recent propshaft issues. I have just sent the magnets and epoxy metal to Dunning and Fairbank, who are going to bond new ones onto the new front prop section, before balancing it....

If they are near the ends they should not affect the balance. Glue them on then stretch a piece of cut down inner tube over them but you will have to take the prop off to do it.

That'd probably be a really bad idea, neodymium magnets are pretty fragile and rather brittle, I imagine bolting them on would break them.

I have a single magnet from a hard-disk drive that I trimmed down (think 3cm long 1cm wide).

Anyway I used a big jubilee clip to hold it onto the driveshaft at the inner tripod joint. Not particularly pretty, but no-one ever sees it and it has worked fine.

Also it was locost.

Agreed on using a magnet as a washer. A really elegant idea, but you won't be able to tighten it enough as the magnets material is really brittle.

Shallow hole and bond in.
