eccsmk - 17/10/09 at 05:37 PM

is it possible to bend 2 ich o.d. CDS tube (3mm wall thickness) with a centre type hydraulic bender??

if not i'll have to crack on with finding someone to bend it for me
thank you folks

I would guess it would depend on how powerful the press was but from past posts on here I think it distorts somewhat.

In my experience it will ripple on the inside then crack on the outside so I paid £15 a bend at a mandrel place.

I however did not try filling with sand and capping so it may be possible as per various utube vids

well im not too keen on ruining any pipe
especialy with the amount its just cost me

i will try to get hold of someone willing to bend it for me
thank you for the replies

Been there got the T-shirt including filling with sand etc on some seamless 1 1/2". This was with a bender which simply applied to force in one place with a die. All attempts were pretty useless. In the end I took it took a local fabricator who has an amazing workshop right outside his house. He used a bender similar to the US pro tools one and the bends were very neat and tidy. I think the key was that the force moves as the bend is applied and the tube complies.

I'm considering buying a pro-tools bender with 2" die for my own project, so if I do in the next couple of weeks I'll drop You a U2U and you're welcome to pop down and give it a go

Do some searching on youtube to find out how it's done. There are some films on this subject. If you search on this site you should get there as well.

Personally, I wouldn't bother trying to do this myself, unless you have plenty of CDS tube to give it a couple of tries.

there is a method where you pack the pipe with sand use an oxy lamp to manually bend the pipe.

I have the article on the work pc will post tomorrow

Any good with DIY hydraulics?

You should be OK with 1/8 wall, Bent my Roll bar and a couple of bike engine bars with a dry bollock bender, without using sand.
Getting the dimensions right takes some working out though.
Cheers,
Bob

im going to try one of the 45 degree bends with a centre bender
if thats fails its not too bad as its only a short piece of tube

i have got a couple of people to call this week so i'll keep you posted on my findings
thank you all once again
