tools for first build?
daniel mason - 23/1/10 at 03:20 PM

what tools am i going to need in order to complete my first build? i am an electrician so i have;
full hand tools, pilers,side cutters,hacksaws,screw drivers,pipe grips, multi- meter,full set of spanners, work bench, cordless and 240 volt drills, full 1/2 " socket set, trolley jacks,axle stands,bench grinder.hole saws/drill bits
if some tools are unique and will only serve me one purpose i will do my best to borrow them,especially if very expensive!
i have no rivnut tool, or rivet gun for example

are you going to buy or build a chassis?
i think you've got the basics covered. think you'll get most of it done with what you have. you might need to consider a grinder later, and a rivet gun. they're cheap enough. i never needed a rivnut thingy myself.

am going to buy a chassis. i have a bench grinder but no hand held grinder.

If you are building, you will need an angry grinder to cut the steel and a welder to 'stick' them all together

my welding skills are none existant! lol

i think you'll find a hand held angle grinder more useful than the bench grinder. i have both, and the angle grinder gets a lot more use

Pick up a cheap mig welder, and start practising. My chassis was complete, but my welder has still been used loads! I couldn't weld when I started, now I can at least stick bits together with lots of splatter!

angry grinder, welder, gloves, gogles, fire extinguisher, set of matching spanners (to hold the bolt and turn the nut at the same time)
although you are buying your chassis, it is rare the a builder is completely satisfied with their "finished" car and future upgrades generally involve changes to the chassis (engine mounts etc) so welding will be a handy skill to learn and (no offence to pro welders) quite easy to pick up with hints and tips from other welders.

Daniel, if you're building a MNR, the angriest tool you will need is a Dremmel !

Very true George.

You will not need a big hammer either!
