Sheet metal folder from Screwfix ??
Tris - 8/2/10 at 09:50 PM

Hi All,

Has anyone brought or used the sheet metal folder that screwfix sell ? Is it any good ? (i unfortunately don't have the welding kit to make my own from plan....)

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/55322/Van-Car-Accessories/Body-Repair/Sheet-Metal-Folder#

I only need one to fit a couple of panels, so i am trying to find a cheap alternative (i am still getting over just how expensive the larger ones are !)

Cheers
Tris

You could get a local fab shop to bend it on a saturday morning for a few quid I imagine - do you really want to buy something, especially something that might be sub-standard, that you only need for a few tasks and then have it taking up room?

what panels are you folding ?? if its only the return on the side panels clamp the material between two pieces of 2*2 and use a slapper to fold the material alternatively another piece of 2*2 placed onto the overhang then strike with a mallet.

Check my side panels in my archive did these last night

I have one very similar to the ebay one above, does my job and is pretty strong.

2 bits of 2" angle in vices on work bench or try local tech college/ secondary school - slim chance but worth a go

Now that ebay auction does look tempting, although i think i would regret the 400 mile round trip to go and pick it up !!

Initially i just need one to bend some 2mm Ali sheeting (the sheeting is about 1meter in length) to some funny angles.

Ive been using the '2x2 with a big heavy mallet' approach, and i was considering getting something a bit better for the workshop. Don't think i will be popping down to screwfix though, but i will start watching out for something abit sturdier on ebay that's a bit closer to home .

Yes, but the OP is in Bedfordshire and he'd have to go all the way to Essex to get the slapper

I have one similar to that - very handy, but 1.6mm is the max capacity, and then only as long as you don't use the whole width. If you want to use the whole width then 1mm is more realistic. 2mm would be OTT.
