How about a "Tools" section ?
UncleFista - 4/5/04 at 06:48 PM

I was just thinking that most of us have invested a fair whack in tools specifically for the building of our cars.

Does anyone else think a section on tools would be of interest ?

Things like reviews, availability, bargains and even "Tool pool" posts where people could ask to borrow a specialist tool instead of having to buy one for a 10 min job.

Just an idea

Tony

RoadkillUK - 5/5/04 at 06:11 PM

Great Idea !!

(Unclefista made me say that, he's my bro)

JoelP - 5/5/04 at 06:45 PM

the trike section was a success at least.

personally, id say it falls into 'locost related' or 'wanted', but if chris can be arsed then why not?!

paulbeyer - 5/5/04 at 10:20 PM

Sounds good, go for it Chris.

tractorboy - 6/5/04 at 07:11 AM

sounds like a good idea to me too. but i have a feeling there maybe a waiting list for really big hammers!so book early to avoid disappointment!!!!!

barrie sharp - 6/5/04 at 07:56 AM

great idea !!
like the tool pool idea now that i have nearly finished and brought all the tools!!!!

locoboy - 6/5/04 at 10:00 AM

I know the majority of users on here are honest folks but i do think their should be a disclaimer to say that if you borrow a pool tool from another fellow builder you agree that if it is damaged or broken in use/transit you will replace it in an old for new capacity.

Im sure we have all lent somethng to someone in the past to have it A) never returned B) Damaged, or C) returned in a completely buggered state.

Just my 2 peneth but i agree it could be a useful resource to have,

Cita - 6/5/04 at 11:02 AM

Great idea except....you only need one bummer to let the whole thing collapse (been there before). The problem is that the bummer has what he wanted and the honest guys are left standing out in the rain!
Nevertheless it can help sort out the trash!
Good luck!

Bob C - 6/5/04 at 11:31 AM

tool pool idea sounds good, especially for jigs etc eg window channel bender or wishbone jigs. So how will that work? (on the site I mean - will it be something like the photos section, with a search facility??)
Cheers
Bob C

ned - 6/5/04 at 01:29 PM

no, people should just post up a wanted style advert like bobc has. most genuine people on this site ar known by at least one other so should help to minimise anyone takng the peee.

Ned.

locoboy - 6/5/04 at 05:02 PM

as ned says we are cover all corners of britain prety much so sending someone to knock on the wee takers door shouldnt be a problem!

Terrapin_racing - 12/5/04 at 11:49 AM

me too

helen & phill - 5/12/04 at 05:44 PM

Sounds like a great idea

I'm sure we've all been caught in that great position of having to spend a fortune to get one small yet very important job done before the next.

bigbriglasgow - 15/2/05 at 06:47 PM

I think that sounds like a great idea! having bought my locost from another member up here in sunny scotland and on getting home the clutch died i went into the forum and asked for help, was offered free secondhand clutches, the seller of the locost actually turned up at the house with a new clutch kit and offered to help fit it. now on to why i am telling you all this .... posted on forum asking about a loan of engine hoist and to cut long story short another member is dropping 1 off at my house on friday! so let me say i am wholeheartedly for this sharing of resources and have worked a loan system with friends on the basis of "you bend it you buy it" for a long time.

Kind of longwinded i know but just overwhealmed by the support that exists!

Thanks for listening to my speel!!

Brian

ah, the 3 B's as applied to cars - borrowed it, bent it, bought it!

skodaman - 25/7/05 at 09:27 AM

Yeah great idea. Anyone got a fully equipped garage they don't need for a few years. I've got a few spanners but need hoist, welder, valve spring compressor, very large hammer etc. etc.

omega0684 - 3/1/06 at 01:42 AM

Confused but excited. - 4/2/06 at 11:53 PM

Sounds a great idea.
Even if not to loan, a data base of where to buy/hire at least cost would be a great help to most of us I would think. Especially those like me, with little knowledge of the motor industry.

I too think a Tools section would be a good thing to have being of interest to everyone. Much time is spent locating good value for money and by pooling our knowledge base, much time and, hopefully, money can be saved.

I recently bought a 48 inch box and pan folder for just over £500. I am really pleased with it. It is rated for 18swg mild steel and 14swg aluminium with thicker gauges being possible for shorter lengths.

If anyone is interested, i can let you know where I bought it from.

John

Blakey_boy - 5/3/07 at 11:58 PM

I think it's a great idea. A tools section could save the money conscious quite a bit of time as well as money. Excellent

Gixer Indy - 26/7/07 at 12:35 PM

Yeah,go for it. My bro's got a lathe and milling machine, which he uses to do jobs for the vintage bike boys,im sure he would be up for doing jobs for locosts,in return for a few drinking vouchers.

I've got a set of combination hammers always found you couldn't beat a good clout

great idea, but to me is expensive go to england to have a hummer. jajjajaa

dhutch - 7/5/09 at 11:11 PM

I think its a great idea.

I also think that a 'tools pool' facility would be great, like car pooling.

Ive mentioned it a few times in a few places, but havnt had chance to set it up myself yet.

Basicaly like car pools for car sharing, a website where people (members) can detail the equipement they have, location, avilablity, etc. And you can go on an search for who in your area has what your after.

Obviously you wouldnt bother for screwdrivers. But im talking about hydrulic pullers, welders, engine craines, trailers, towcars, towcar drivers even.

The idea was born out of the concept for a self recovery service, made up of amatures around the country with the tools (and trailers) to do the job.
- This is after the tintop (no breakdown cover) nearly broke down in bristol, and which point i come to the conclusion if it did die my best bet would be geting my uncal (worcester) to come out with his trailer and drag in home (cheshire).
