Spring compressors? Lowering an a4
Kriss - 20/4/10 at 10:29 PM

I'm shortly picking up an a4 and want to drop it a few mm on springs. However I am sure I need to compress the spring to remove.

And locost ways of doing so or cheap supplier of the correct tool?

Will be a 2003 a4 avant Tdi sport

what i did was make to hook king of things out of some pretty thick steel, the welded one on to one end of a threaded bar, the welded the other on to a tube that slides over the threaded bar.

Then a nut and big washer pushes the tubed one towards the welded on compressing the spring.

ETA piccy: hope this makes sense

ffs! they're £20 a pair at halfords.

having had a spring jump out of a spring compressor before, DO NOT scrimp on this.

sorry miks but there's no way i'd use that style ever again. get the proper 2 finger ones

Who needs spring compressors anyway? Just point them down the garden and undo the top nut very slowly making sure you don't lean over the spring.....

Chris

PS: Do not do this!!

i understand that bit, just wasn't sure what was amusing about the rest.

i lost a fair chunk of skin off my index finger (luckily not the whole lot) and it nearly broke my dad's knee. he was hobbling for weeks

don't understimate coil springs and don't go locost on the tools

cheers again!

DON'T DO IT!!

The A4 has S curve front suspension and has the finest setup system of any car on the market. It can take hours to get it right.

If you lower the car, the design will be compromised and you will end up with a foul handling car.

Was laughing because it was a correct but abrupt response and made me giggle - basically, it was exactly what I had in my head to respond with until I saw yours

Well in Canada, all the imported cars are jacked up about 10 cm over what you have in the UK or Europe, so don't talk about bad handling!! I am sure they don't do anything else to the suspension to make up for that little mod required by the idiots at Transport Canada. There is nothing more stupid looking than a nice car jacked up to look like a 4x4, with tiny profile tyres and small rims.

I would also be interested in lowering my A4 Avant.

ps... handling for me improved 1000% when I put Bridgestone Potenza RE 11's on. Unbelievable difference to previous rubber.
