liam.mccaffrey - 30/4/10 at 11:28 AM

last time i bought (4 years ago) i got separate ali slotting discs.

BenB - 30/4/10 at 11:29 AM

For ali you do need special discs the standard ones get gunked up in no time at all!

mangogrooveworkshop - 30/4/10 at 11:29 AM

No you should not use a cutting disc on ali.
Better to use a jigsaw with oil lube to do cuts .
The carborundum discs can and will explode showering you with shrapnel....
Been there done that not very nice

cool, thanks lads
started cutting some tube with one last night, and before i even got through the wall decided it was probably a bad idea. but seeing as they're so thin and light, i didn't know if they'd be ok

boggle - 30/4/10 at 11:44 AM

they do explode and hurt.....

but i use them

hacksaw may be better...

blakep82 - 30/4/10 at 11:45 AM

yeah, i changed to hacksaw, but i never seem to be able to cut straight

tony-devon - 30/4/10 at 11:56 AM

as they say, no they will snatch/let go and its not pleasant

if you doing a few the same size, try and fine a bit of steel tube thats a nice sliding fit over the one your wanting to cut, just a short bit, with a jubilee clip at the end your not cutting, this holds it in place, then just run the hacksaw down against the steel tube end

simples

I get these from the staff shop in work (bosch) and have used them a few times on ali and they were good:

I've never had probs cutting ally with them. Put some tallow on the ally - if nothing else, it makes it smell nice

Just make sure you have proper saftey gear on - not t shirt and shorts!

Do you have a good quality (heavy) frame and decent bi-metal blades? I always had trouble until I spent money on good blades.

I use a plumbers pipe cutter, cuts through 1.5mm steel tube, if you take it slow, like this one or the same thing made for cutting exhaust pipes
