Why do you need to remove it?
The usual way is to make a hole in it and then lever it out

Heat (lots, and lots of it) + Lump hammer x 24" cheater bar = Victory.

Turns out it was the water jacket. Arse.

A lump hammer will always sort things out; one way or another!
