welding boss on manifold.

Quick question…

Going to stop off and buy some stainless welding wire to weld the boss on the manifold.

Cant get to my Mig welder at the moment but It’s a Clark 150te. It came with wire but not sure if its fitted with a 0.8 or 0.6mm tip.But have both.

Questions

1. What size wire should I get ?
2. What type of gas eg argon mix or co2 ?

it is possible to weld stainless with mild steel wire, think can be harder with stainless wire due to stiffness.

Wire size isn't too important but I'd probably go for 0.6 out of choice. You might find that the wire drive wheel is reversible too for different size wire (mine is but didnt realise for many years!!).

Pure argon is best for stainless. A faster wire feed speed is usually required too.

Yes it is possible. I have done it with my exhaust.

But if you do it with normal wire, I believe that this will make it rusty later hence the correct is stainless wire.

make sure the torch line is reasonably straight from the welder to the work cos ss wire really doesn't like coming off the reel that much, and it can really slow down or jam if the line is at mad angles.

The wheels in the set I use (cebora - branded as snap-on) don't straighten it too well either and it comes out of the torch in a circular motion sometimes, having retained it's coiled up tension to some degree, this is 0.8 though, 0.6 could be much better

Have fun!

I tried to get some .6 S/S wire and found it pretty much unobtainable, but .8 seems to be stocked everywhere. I also always use argon CO2 mix for welding S/S and it works just fine, you DO need straight argon for welding alloy though. HTH Ray

I read on a mig welding site before that mix is what you want for ss, argon produced worse welds, there was a demo too with pics
