How do I drill through hard metal?
smart51 - 10/7/10 at 01:36 PM

I'm drilling holes in a Fiat ARB to mount drop links but without much success. The pilot hole went through both ends but since then I've just blunted every drill I've tried on it. How can I drill through this stuff?

A decent cobolt drill bit. drill slow with lots of oil.

Use a 'decent' twist drill. Chinese HSS drills are not man enough for it. Try a engineer's supplies type shop and get a dormer or equivalent.

Use lots of pressure, do it in bursts and add a spot of grease or oil.

Cobalt drills are the dog's danglies for hard stuff but what you're drilling won't be that hard....

^ same, theyre about 3 times the price but well worth it...especially when youve blunte three normal drills

file a flat before you start and centre punch it.
The rest is as above but don't cook off your drill bit.

Thanks guys. Cobalt drills it is then. The only dilemma - eBay or not. My local tool specialist closes at five to five so I can only get there on Fridays. Will an eBayer post be quicker?

I have a good selection of carbide drills. They will drill through just about anything, no matter how hard.
Let me know ASAP what size you require and if I have a spare I will post it to you.
If I haven't got a carbide I have various other special drills that will equally well drill an ARB.
These drills are best used in a pedestal type drill but can be used in a hand held drill if you are careful with alignment.
Could post First Class Monday, should be with you Tuesday ( or Wednesday)
I will certainly have 8mm and 10mm sizes.
Only too happy to help.

Geoff.
