Welding Q...
scootz - 2/8/10 at 09:50 AM

Can anyone tell me roughly how long it would take for a proficient welder to run off a neat foot-long seam between a piece of 2mm thick mild-steel sheet and 2mm tube???

Ta!

not very long assuming its a single pass to get the weld size you need (it should be at that thickness of material)

are you timming yourself or are you trying to price a job ?

Provided you can do it all in one go - so don't have to stitch it an wait for it to cool and avoid distortion (which could take a while) then with a bit of set up time, about 10 - 15 minutes absolute max. TIG would take longer I expect

(that's what it would take me and I'm a reasonable hobby MIG'r)

Cheers!

Not trying to price anything... just getting a 'feel' for how long the process takes.

depends on the accuracy required.

How long to set up the two pieces together, how many test welds to check penetration, how much cleaning of the weld surfaces you do etc.

If its just fannying about quick and dirty, a few minutes - but my welder is next to my work bench.

One of my welders would do that in about 5 mins max in tig. Mig would not be very long at all. you have to be carful tho as you are going to be putting in a lot of heat. If it was me i would put small tacks every 50mm and then one cap over the top.

"one cap over the top"... what does that mean Matty?

Cheers.

Basically tack it all together so it wont distort as much along the line.

Then fully weld over the top of that is what i think matt means

The actual weld would take less than 1 minute from pulling the trigger to letting go if you do it in one. 2mm should be easy enough in one pass.

this might be worth thinking about: linky

either that of I'm sure you can find someone near by to tell you waht your doing wrong

Cheers Robert.

I've offered Mr W the going day-rate to teach me to weld on a number of occasions, but he's too bloomin busy!

mcerd1 - 2/8/10 at 01:07 PM

you could always ask my dad / brother if you just want to get started

scootz - 2/8/10 at 01:16 PM

Do they possess Mr W style skills!?

mattyc - 2/8/10 at 01:37 PM

Sorry yes the cap on a butt weld is the final run that you do. in my line of business its mainly cosmetic but with light plate work that is butted tightly together its the norm to just to use a single run/ cap.

scootz - 2/8/10 at 01:39 PM

Cheers Matt!

I havn't seen his welding so I couldn't comment, they tend to be a bit more agricultural on there every day stuff

but they'd get you started on mma / mig / gas welding with steel

Thanks for that Robert! I very well may come back to you!

I'm struggling to locate a good Tig, so am now considering a quality Mig.

Thing is, I really want to learn to weld ali too... can it be done neatly using something like this Lincoln Mig?

If your dad/brother are the same person, it sounds like you come from somewhere west of Penzance!
