Attaching Floor Panel to Round Tube...
scootz - 2/8/10 at 12:39 PM

I've done Ali floors before where the panel was riveted to a square-tubed chassis... easy enough!

What's the accepted strategy for attaching a floor to a round-tubed chassis? Rivet as normal and form the excess panel edge around the outside edge of the tube??? Weld mounting lugs to the chassis and bolt to them???

Cheers!

That's how I did it, and how Dax recommend.

If you are using 1.2mm NS4 for the floor which is ideal for the job being very tough you may have a problem trying to dress it round the tube.

Perhaps another way would be to cut it off flush with a projected vertical line on the circumference of the tube. Bond and fix with 5mm countersunk rivets and then put a right angle fold into the side panel sufficient for it to go beyond the diameter of the round tube and rivet through both thicknesses into the round tube.

A good tip I came across which does work is to find the diameter of the round tube by placing a line of cylindrical magnets on the aluminium. You can then draw a line for the rivets.
