Helicoil sizes

I've went and stripped threads out of my engine head. It's a 10mm bolt hole.
So do I just get an m10 helicoil? I've seen different ones advertised ie. m10x1, m10x1.25, m10x1.50.... etc
How do I figure out which I need? and what size drill bit do I need.
Dont want to buy a whole kit for one repair.

You need to know the pitch of the bolt thread 1.25, 1.5 or 1.75 or 2 using a thread gauge or by comparing with an M10 bolt or tap of known pitch.

Single size helicoil kits come complete with the correct drill and tool cost about £12 to 25 off ebay.


Helicoil is best suited to your needs.

Yes, thats the pitch, most M10's are 1.5mm pitch if im correct.

If you have a bolt and a decent steel rule you can simply measure ten or so threads!

You will need to get the full kit as the correct drill size and tap is supplied, along with a selection of inserts and the tang breaker tool. Admittedly you might be able to source them all separately but kits are not too expensive at £13.52 here

A set of thread pitch gauges cost peanuts , will last a lifetime and will ensure you get the correct Helicoil kit. I've been in the motor trade over e 40 years and still use mine . Don't remember ever getting a drill bit in any Helicoil set , I've always had to buy it separately, the size is normally printed on box.

Looks like 1.5mm standard to me metric
what dose the bolt hold on ?

It's mm between thread peaks, easiest way with no gauge is measure across say 10 threads then divide by 10 (or however many threads you measured across).

Cam belt tensioner... Having a weird noise up front and all the adjusting of the tension eventually stripped it out...

10mm is a very small dia for a head bolt, what engine ?

Not a head bolt, YB cam pulley tensioner.
