Digital vernier caliper £9.99
fatfranky - 3/7/04 at 12:44 PM

I've already mentioned this in another post, but in case anyone's interested Lidl supermarket (similar to Aldi) are seeling 0-6" digital vernier calipers from Thurs 8 July for £9.99.

For those that hven't used Verniers, they can do the work of an external micrometer, internal micrometer and depth micrometer, they are normally a bit more dificult to read but with a digital one even this problem is overcome.

I shouldn't think they'll be top quality but for atenner what do you expect?

Hope this is of some use

Had one of these from lidl last time round - has proved to be most excelent and useful.

Browser - 3/7/04 at 05:37 PM

Dunno what their quality is like, most of the time you are looking for repeatability when measuring. You might find these work OK but don't bounce too well if dropped or, cannot be repaired/recalibrated if needed. That having been said, at that price who the hell can grumble? A Mitutoyo would set you back about £60 for the same type of device.

tractorboy - 3/7/04 at 07:01 PM

i brought a similar set from netto(also similar to aldi) and they have been fine no probs at all and even came in a hard case with a spare battery!

MarkL - 3/7/04 at 10:11 PM

They also have a 400mm laser level with tripod and case for £9.99 very useful and cheap.

Also a 580 piece nut & bolt set containing M5-M8 nuts, self securing nuts, machine screws, washers, split washers and locking screws including sturdy organiser box for £3.99.

If some smart arse tells me it's cheaper at screwfix direct then I think I will invest in the Blood pressure monitor on page 2 @ £14.99.

Staple balls - 4/7/04 at 12:10 AM

it's cheaper at screwfix!

Peteff - 4/7/04 at 07:31 AM

140 over 80 thanks. Does that shelf look straight to you?. Is the caliper a metal one with metric and imperial settings? if it is I'll get one. Some of the offers are gone if you don't get there quick. They appear on ebay the week after as "buy it now" with double prices and postage on top

MarkL - 5/7/04 at 09:33 AM

Heres the link to the special page with the bolts & calipers.
http://www.lidl.co.uk/gb/index.nsf/pages/c.o.oow.20040708.index

They don't sell these at Screwfix. The blood pressure Monitor can be found here

And for the smart arses check out the Bottom Row 99P

andyps - 5/7/04 at 12:43 PM

The DIY supprt and DIY support arm could be useful.

sb_scottmonkey - 5/7/04 at 08:21 PM

shall be down there for one of them!

givemethebighammer - 5/7/04 at 10:43 PM

Nut and bolt set doesn't look to be high tensile stuff so no good for those critical areas.

the calipers however are a "must have"

fatfranky - 8/7/04 at 07:31 PM

Well that'll teach me to tell you lot about a bargain!

Went to 2 different branches and they were all sold.

Anyone in the Newcastle area who got one hang your head in shame

Noodle - 8/7/04 at 07:46 PM

My father in law was there at 9am and was about 30th in the line.

One of the calipers had fallen down the back and he got me the last one!

He said there were blokes grabbing armfuls of stuff. Presumably these will appear on EBay very soon

Seems OK. Results tally with the manual one I borrowed from a friend.

Cheers,

Neil - The digital-caliper-owning-person

givemethebighammer - 8/7/04 at 09:19 PM

nicklondon - 9/7/04 at 06:24 AM

had loads left at Tottenham at 10 thur.

Chris_R - 13/7/04 at 06:53 PM

I bought a dial vernier at Cromwell for a fiver, but it was crap. I then bought a normal vernier caliper, made by Oxford Precision, for £15. Not quite as cheap, but nice and sturdy.

In bargains elsewhere.

James - 16/7/04 at 03:08 PM

Well drove blinkin' miles to find a Lidl.

Did they have callipers? Did they buggery. What they did have was a very scary shop full of weirdos.

.... and that was before all the Locostbuilders came in asking for callipers!

James

BMF - 16/7/04 at 03:11 PM

James

I did the same, drove all the way to Farnham last Thursday, got there at 10, and they had all gone, and yes it was full of wierdos!

Going to try the Aldi in Camberley next Thursday!

Cheers Ben

James - 16/7/04 at 03:19 PM

That's where I've just been!

It's better than the one in Redhill. The pykey quotient was even higher there!

Tell me next week what time you're going Thursday and maybe we can meet there for safety in numbers!

James

EDIT: The Aldi and Lidl are opposite each other in Camberley.

I work as a 'Mental Health' support worker ,and there are lots of 'clients' in the Redhill area.

Dave, what is a Mental Health support worker? I work for a company that transfers mental health patients once they have been sectioned. We've had some great wrestling matches. We always win though (a combination of C & R training and Jiu-Jitsu).

Peteff - 8/8/04 at 09:35 AM

We are forming an alcoholic support group, propping up bars around the town. It gets a bit mental later though, no ju-jisu though just the occasional hurling bout.
