Advice please about painting some brackets
pdm - 2/4/11 at 11:09 AM

Hi Folks

Long time no post for me.

I've a quick question about painting some brackets - they won't be on show but I do want to do them as well as possible. First time I've tried for a "proper job" finish so please bear with me.

I'd already sanded them down, got 99% of rust off and treated the pitting with kurust. It fizzed, went blue and dried black so seems to have done what it's meant to.

Today I've primered them with U-POL Zinc primer - 3 coats of, then some Halfords Gloss Black - 5 light coats of. Finish looks ok so far.

Anyway I bought some clearcoat to finish off with and it says leave base coat at least 24 hours BUT the paint says leave to harden for 2 weeks before polishing.

If I clearcoat tomorrow will my paint be ok ? Should I clearcoar or just leave it ?

thanks
Paul

I was talking to someone recently, and how best to paint them for use with a powder coated chassis.

He suggested plasticote gives a fairly similar end result, if your powder coated....

Yes, satin black plasticote is very similar in appearance to powdercoat and is good and tough. I use that on top of etch primer personally (u-pol).
