The bushes on my tin top are like a pair of top hat bushes glued to the crush tube. I want to get them out without breaking them. How do I do this without a press? Any ideas?

Use a drift to knock out the crush tube?

I'm pretty sure that would ruin the bushes, given the rubber is bonded to the tube.

If the crush tube is bonded, how do they get installed in the first place? Is this definitely not a metalastic bush with a steel outer which is pressed into the upright?

You'll never get them out whole in my view. You have to drill lots of little holes in the rubber and then drive it out.

i wouldnt drill them out, in fact i didnt when i replaced all of the suspension bushes on my defender, i used fire! get a blow torch and burn them out, much less hassle and much more fun

Trouble is I bought the arms and uprights of eBay with new sport bushes fitted. It turns out the wheel bearings are knackered and I would like to remove the bushes and fit them to my old uprights which are fine otherwise. Removing the bushes without damage is essential. Without removing them, I can't tell if they have a metal outer sleeve.

Use a hacksaw/dremel/cut-off wheel to carefully cut away at the outright - cut a slot through to the bush's outer sleeve, then just open it up slightly and tap the bush out?

Upright will obviously be scrap

I doubt that they're glued in". More than likely they're metalastic bushes (rubber bush bonded to steel outer)and the outer is pressed in to the upright. If they are and you get the rubber out then the bush is fubar. Try and press the whole bush out, but you'llbe lucky to do it without messing it up. If you don't want to ruin the bushes then it might be better to just fit new bearings.
