Cleaning aluminium engine covers
karlak - 3/5/11 at 06:12 PM

Any idea how to clean the Duratec engine?

The ally has pitted somewhat and is just a bit grubby. I have cleaned all the old oil and grime off with Gunk, but it still looks dirty and old. Any hints / tips on how to bring it up a bit.

I am not stripping the engine, so dunking in a big bucket of something is not going to happen. Just me, a brush and hopefully some magic chemical cleaner.

I have tried WD40, Gunk, Brake cleaner, Iso-clene and fairy liquid. Oh and a bit of baking powder..

I'd cover it in Gunk and leave overnight, then jetwash. It should be ok as long as you dont concentrate the jet on the gaskets, seals or ports.

blast it with soda powder and repaint

Alkalis solutions on aluminium alloys isn't good idea but you could acid clean it ---- marinade it in a solution made from boiled up rhubarb leaves (Oxalic acid) or Naval Jelly (phosphoric acid).

We have a strong alloy acid cleaner at work. Its nasty but works very well.

Waist of time, it will go white and fluffy pretty quickly after cleaning as soon as is sees some damp.

Been there done that!!

Quickspray with a 2K lacquer aerosol after cleaning.
