Machine Mart are doing their VAT free thing again and I've been wondering about a workshop press for a while now - mostly for wheel bearings
etc.
Question is, how capable is say a 10 tonne press? I'd imagine it'd be fine for what I want, but just want to make sure as I'd be a bit
gutted if I purchase and then cant do wheel bearings!
But then, assuming 10 ton is pretty capable, what on earth would you need 50T for?
machine mart presses
Probably wouldn't need a 50T press for anything. - it is however much wider so you can get bigger stuff in it if you are servicing HGVs for
instance.
I can't imagine a 10T press would be a waste of money as I'm sure it would be very capable.
When I worked at Volvo truck and bus the 10 ton press was used loads the 50 ton was used for nowt
10t has done us fine for bearings and stuff. Only thing it didn't do was a marine driveshaft UJ fitting which required some absofreakingmentally high pressure to fit and had to be sent away.
We have 10t, 20t and 50t presses at work. The 10t gets used on a weekly basis. The bigger ones are used for hanging coats and hard hats on. They are really slow to use so unless you need a biggy, get a 10t. The 10t is fine for pressing bearings and stuff.
I've got a 10t press and never had anything it didn't move. Occationally need to give things a "tap" as well just to break te bond; Shockwave works wonders.
I have an Axminster 20 ton press and it's brilliant, it only cost £269 and is excellent quality
Worth a look

We use a 20t press at work & rarely need it past 10t, most jobs take 5 or less. We have had stuff in that beat it though, but agricultural machinery that hasnt been apart for years etc. When something snaps at 18t it dont half go bang!
Thanks for the replies chaps
10T it is then.
For those asking about Machine Mart they are doing VAT free until the 21st Nov - I got a text and an email at the weekend with a voucher code, £30 min
spend. If you havent had it I'm sure you could contact them and ask them to send you one.
only thing I've ever needed much more on was the taper on the end of 4ha salisbury axle halfshafts, had one go to 40t....that went bang!
