Getting very bored of doors sticking round here! Want to plane a few mm off.

Want an electric wood plane but what is worth going with? Basically I want some model/brand recomendations.

£35 ish own brand from Wickes or Screwfix (Erbauer)
£70 ish Bosch sort of grade
£100 ish for Makita.

It'll be pretty rarely used but I'll fit door/frames with is mostly I expect.


Have used my Dad's 25yr.old 500w Black and Decker. It seems a bit 'tacky placky'. I usually buy quality tools but went overkill with my 1200W Bosch circular saw and it's a bit big and heavy to use easily!


If it comes with a dust bag or vacuum cleaner attachment then so much the better as they don't half make a lot of mess!!!

An ordinary Jack plane is better for doors. I have an electric plane and it leaves a gouge where it starts or finishes and the hand plane can start with a feather edge so leaves a much better finish.

I borrowed a mates (and broke it - oops). Since needed to do some more but as I know it's something I'll only occasionally use I ended up buying a 2nd hand Bosch of eBay for roughly half what they sell for new.

Did the job ok. Also I've never had a problem with gouging, you just hit the surface running (and obviously don't plane off the end!)

Dust is always an issue though! +1 for getting one with a bag and I'd still use goggles. I was rushing to replace all the doors in my house a few years ago and I left my goggles downstairs and did a few with my head at the same height as the plane and no goggles. It REALLY hurt just to move my eyes around in my head in the next day.

PS Those screwfix prices on Bosch seem a bit high from memory - I'd shop around a bit.

always very easy to remove more than you intend to!

i now always use mine on a very small cut depth

I bought a £29.99 electric plane in Homebase last week, and have only used it once so far, and seems fine

I cant tell you which one, as its round at my Daughters house, as it looks like every internal door, in her new place will need doing,

I bought a new cheapo 'Worx' one off eBay for about £18. Fitted about 6 internal doors with it and can't fault it for the money.

No idea what it's like.

cheap ones are fine for light use. Sharp blade, light passes, and dont break out the back of the wood.
