Hammerite alternative
Davegtst - 29/12/11 at 04:53 PM

Looks like i need to give the trailer i have just bought a coat of paint to freshen it up a bit. I was thinking black hammerite but it seems to be around £40 for 2.5 litres. Is there a cheaper altenative or is it best to stick with hammerite to help prevent rust?

This subject used to come up frequently on here for people painitng their own chassis. Iirc a popular alternative was Dulux Gloss exterior paint. Durable, didn't chip so easily and came in much wider range of colours

I did my old covin chassis in black household gloss, but it does need to be primed first with a suitable metal primer

Screwfix do their own version of hammerite/smoothrite mate.

Its incredibly cheaper but only available in black & silver i think.

I did our mini 10" steel wheels with the silver just to try & get them looking good until i can get them blasted & powdercoated, they still look great 2 years later.

Good news is that screwfix is only a mile or so away from us too

Thanks andy. do you mean the leyland trade paint?

Hi Dave, the tin i have here of smooth silver says:

'No nonsense smooth metal' paint on it.

Searched screwfix but it seems to have gone up in price since it came out, its about 2/3 the price of hammerite now, also i just read some reviews & people are saying its pretty crap for applying.......i can only presume it might have had a change of ingredients because when i got it 2 years ago, it was very cheap & covered really well.

Might still be worth a small tin just to see ? i have found internet reviews pretty shite sometimes.

Good luck

From reading the reviews it looks like they have changed it from oil based to water based and now it's crap. The leyland stuff is only 16 quid for 2.5 litres I might give that a go.

Sounds like a plan & pretty good value too

How about something like this: http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=90826&post=756908

That brings back some memories, doesn't it?

Mr B&Q do an alternative to Hammerite called Fortress. It is only available in Black or White (AFAIA) and it is a bit cheaper.
