I have an engine on a pallet in my garage... but my engine crane can't reach anywhere near the middle of the pallet. How do I lift the engine off?

It's quite heavy (M3 lump) so by hand isn't a great option. I could take the wheels off the crane then thread the legs through the pallet, and then cut the pallet away, perhaps? Or tip the engine over so the lifting points are at the edge of the pallet... could see that going badly wrong though. Unfortunately the garage roof isn't strong enough to support a pulley.

Ideas?

Can you 'walk' the engine to the edge of the pallet ?

That's what I did with a GMC 5.7 V8 Diesel - possibly the heaviest engine in the world - except maybe a Pinto

Can't you get a few mates to help drag/push the engine nearer to the crane?

prop the pallet up underneath engine then cut pallet back to get closer

put some wedges under engine ( maybe inside the pallet) then saw away pallet frame

Had this Problem with a crane and stand that would not fit.
Long strops and just pull until there is enough to move the engine along the pallet.
Easy does it, you will get the engine closer and closer to the point of lift.

tie a rope round it and drag it out with the car

scaffold/wooden a frame and rope then remove pallet

To elaborate a bit on the above, get a long scaffold pole or sturdy plank, tie rope around engine, put pole through rope hoop and prop the end of the pole on a support right next to the pallet. Lift other end which is some distance from the engine and get someone to pull the pallet out.

Or if you can only find a short pole lift the pole end with the engine crane and you can do it single handed

Take the wheels off the crane then thread the legs through the pallet, and then set fire to the pallet. siemple!

move the engine onto a smaller pallet first.......

Jack up the pallet and choke with bricks and then roll engine crane under pallet. or


Dig a hole the same size & depth as pallet and then drag pallet in to hole and then run engine crane over pallet and list..

Jack car up really high, move over engine, then lower car onto engine. Bolt engine in. Jobs a good un.

Thanks for the suggestions, helpful and otherwise :-) In the end I just manned up and dragged it to the edge of the pallet, which was close enough to get the crane onto it. Problem solved.

Glad you got it sorted - my suggestion would be to mark some lines on the pallet , weld up some 25mm box section into a frame , add wishbones and wheels , a few bits of fiberglass , a wiring loom , then simply drive it off the pallet

Don't bother with a steel frame just bolt the suspension to the pallet. You then have a Morgan.
