anybody have the wherewithall to make one of these?
drill guide
would need to accomodate up to approx 24mm nut
drill size 1.5mm
(really don't wan't to fork out best part of £30 for it and it is very simple - i just don't have the tooling available.)
Or can someone think of an easy way to make one without access to expensive machinery?
Cheers
Dave

Scuse my ignorance but what the hell is it?
James
It's for drilling small holes across the corners of nuts so that locking wire can be passed through - it is possible to do without a drill guide
but it's bloody difficult!
I have a distrust of friction type locking devices and prefer positive locking (tab washers/split pins/wire locking)

Aah, thought it must be that. Why's the hole done through the corner as opposed to one of the flats?
Cheers,
James
if you really get stuck I could have a play with the four jaw at work, won't be until wednesday though as i'm off tomorrow. Email me a rough
sketch including sizes and i shall see what i can make (can't promise anything though!)

Just a wild idea.
drillguid
The body of ali or hard wood, some reinforcement plates and one of these
FRP
to guide drill. Don't know what they are called in English It have to be grinded to fit the nut.
Or forget about the right half and use a vice.
Good luck!
Leto, it is known as a roll pin over here. The only problem I can think of with that is that I could see the drill getting snagged in the gap of the
pin. As the drill bit is only 1.5mm, I could see it breaking very easily.
Protofj, I'll design you one tomorrow at work if you want. I can't get it made, but you could get it costed at your local machine shop?
Somewhere with a laser would be best to profile out the internal cutout.
Regards,
Chris.
Seems it would be easier to use a castle nut and drill the bolt.
That's correct Chris. The pin have to be fully compressed in the hole or it will, most probably, snap the drill.
Cheers!
Just buy the nuts pre-drilled. Drilling every nut is gonna be a pain in the ass. Its not that much more expensive either if you look around. Aircraft Spruce sells pre drilled nuts.
Thing is i already have a lot of the nuts and bolts i need.....
Nice idea Leto, I hadn't even thought of making it out of wood (obviously with some steel reinforcement in the right places)
I think I will have a go this weekend
I assembled a whole bunch of nuts on a length of allthread with a bit of flat bar at each end to hold it all steady. I asked my local laser cutter to spit holes in each of the nuts. Approx 200 nuts for some beer.
why not make it out of steel stock? all you need is a hacksaw and a welder or drill/taps/countersink/screws. if you made it of high carbon steel you could then harden it so you wouldnt need inserts
this could be made with a piece of 10x100 100mm long and 3 bits 20X20 20mm long. used hig carbon steel for the 20x20 and when your finished, heat to
red heat and dunk in a bucket of water. (watch out, it will spit boiling water at you so cover up.)
the hole thing can be welded together or bolted.
Given up trying to make this - just couldn't get it right with my limited tool selection.
have bitten the bullet and ordered one today - only £24 so not too bad i suppose.
Cheers for everyones input though
